Female
sterilization
is called tubal ligation
or ‘tying the tubes.’
Female
sterilisation is a heavier operation than a vasectomy.
Normally it’s performed under general anaesthesia, although sometimes
a local anaesthetic is used.
The
fallopian
tubes may be (1) cut, sealed and bound together, (2) tied off, (3)
blocked, burning the tissue or (4) clamped.
The fourth method is more easily reversible than the other methods and
therefore
used most often.
The
operation makes it impossible for sperm
to unite with an egg
cell and for egg cells to get to the uterus,
thus preventing pregnancy.
