The nuvaring is a method of birth control. It’s a flexible ring that the girl inserts in her vagina like a diaphragm. It falls over the cervix and protects her from pregnancy for one month.
It is 2 inches in diameter and releases progestin and estrogen daily. It works the same way as birth control pills.
You put the ring in yourself during the first 5 days of your period and keep it in for 3 weeks in a row. Then you remove it for a 1-week break, in which you’ll have your period. After this week you insert a new ring. During the whole time you are protected from pregnancy. When using the ring for the first time, a condom needs to be used as a back up for the first seven days.
The reliability when used correctly is 99,6 %. But in reality every year 1 or 2% will get pregnant (1 or 2 out of every 100 girls using it for one year).
In the Netherlands it’s partly paid for by insurance. The girl herself pays €6,47 a month.
