IUS
is short for Intra Uterine System, a relative new and very reliable method of
birth control.
It’s a T shaped plastic device with a reservoir of hormones. It looks like an
IUD.
It’s inserted into the uterus
by a physician.
It continuously releases a small amount of progestagen.
It’s functioning is comparable to oral
contraceptives.
One type of IUS is Progestasert,
which must be replaced every year. Another type is Mirena,
which can remain in place for 5 years.
This method is not recommended for girls because insertion is more difficult than
an IUD. Normally it’s
used by women who have gone through childbirth.
It’s recommended for women with heavy and severely painful
periods, since
it thins the lining of the womb, making periods shorter and lighter. Sometimes
they stop altogether. Advantages
